Pleased that things are moving at @demsoc as I prepare to step down as director-general…

Pleased that things are moving at @demsoc as I prepare to step down as director-general on 31/10. @MarianCramers & @68melstevens are jointly taking over as interim DGs while I finalise handover and plan for my new role as President. Thanks and good luck to them!

As President I won’t be running the organisation day to day any more, but will focus on strategy, writing, network-building and our internal governance and membership – though still here to support and advise the team.

The advert for the DG will be out in the coming weeks.

(I’ll also stay involved in some of our key projects such as @NetZeroCitiesEU for at least a while longer)

We’re changing things around at @demsoc.

We’re changing things around at @demsoc. I’m stepping down as Director General in October to focus on my role as President. A new DG will run the organisation, while I focus on strategy, networks and our governance as chair of our Council.

After 12 years of running the organisation day to day, it’s definitely time for a change – and absolutely no one will be surprised to hear that the “ideas bit” is closer to my heart than Excel spreadsheets.

We’ll shortly be starting an open recruitment for the new DG so if you have what it takes to help us grow and mature to the next level, get polishing your CV.

Between now and October we’ll be reshuffling a bit to line us up behind our theory of change (demsoc.org/theory-of-chan…) and ensure that the new DG has a strong organisation to take on.

Finally, though I will still be very much around after October, it’s a moment to thank the whole Demsoc team for helping us get to a place where we can make this first big transition. And <3 to @dzyrl for bearing with my crazy dream(s) for the last 12 years.

- Excellent thread – and a good example of why our work at @demsoc is not just about national governments, but everything from hyperlocal to European, and from government to associations and companies as well. I wasn’t in Florence for #cofoe #TheFutureIsYours, though @demsoc colleagues were.

I wasn’t in Florence for #cofoe #TheFutureIsYours, though @demsoc colleagues were. I see a lot of people here talking about one recommendation (on more European citizen assemblies) but it’s worth saying there were almost 40 others, on a much wider range of issues.

For me the most interesting recommendations were those on rule of law and media freedom, confirming that these aren’t just elite/Brussels bubble concerns but the concerns of citizens from around Europe.

Also worth noting is how much citizens overall saw Europe as a level of government that needed direct accountability to them – not surprising in some ways but a big change from the state-based proto-confederalism that is the structural logic of today’s EU.

This came out most clearly in the recommendation on (what are known in Brussels as) transnational lists for the European Parliament – a voting system that would force candidates to appeal across national boundaries.

So read the whole list to see a lot of interesting ideas, beyond more CAs, delivered in a very short time. Over to the citizen ambassadors and the others at the conference plenary to see what they can do with this raw material.
