- I agree with @lesoir’s David Coppi that the PS and progressives in general should beware of “2008 syndrome”, where they excite themselves with big ambitions for the post-crisis world but get mugged by a narrative of austerity and deregulation. plus.lesoir.be/298258/article…

Which isn’t to say that the ambitions are wrong, but this time around they need to be sure they can implement them. In Belgium’s current political situation, it’s not an easy task.

This is, once again on COVID, the EU being asked to take action and being constrained by its rules and competencies. EU level is the *obvious* level to implement this sort of research plan. twitter.com/IlvesToomas/st…

It’s striking how few people are asking for less Europe during COVID. Its clear that public and policy expectations of the EU have grown to a scale that is beyond its current structure and powers. One of the tasks for the next period is to understand how what the EU can do can be

brought into alignment with what the public want and need it to do – in a way that is democratic and rooted in ongoing public consent.

“Redemocratising Europe” question from the floor at #florencedebate

“Redemocratising Europe” question from the floor at #florencedebate

Weber: as commission president will put all proposals from the Parlt in a quasi-automatic process that gives effective legislative initiative to the EP.

Verhofstadt: transnational lists, Parliament needs legislative initiative but also tax-raising powers.

Keller: all of the above plus European council transparency and rule of law in member states. #Florencedebate

Italian For Min talking about getting EU closer to citizens.

Italian For Min talking about getting EU closer to citizens. Five proposals: 1: Give EP legislative initiative (👍)
2: Make commission more political – has to behave more like a government would in taking initiative and leading (would surely mean Com Pres has to pick own team?)

3: Need to back the EP with bigger budgets provided through a European tax base and common bonds not just contributions from member states. Need to get closer to 24% of public spending as US Feds spend, from 1% at present.

That means moving away from unanimity on tax in the Council (seems implausible but you never know I guess). Focus on capturing taxes from big multinationals that they are currently avoiding.

4: (not entirely clear, listening to interpretation on the fly, but about migration)
5: majority voting on common foreign and security policy. #SOU2019 @DipPoliticheUE

#marr show letting Sun “Brexposed” claims be repeated unchallenged.

#marr show letting Sun “Brexposed” claims be repeated unchallenged. EU “secret plans” were press releases on Friday. They don’t make no deal OK. They give a seven-month grace period (révocable at any time) during which UK lorries/planes can work to and from EU *but not within it*

Fact checking post-lie is not ideal but not aiding in their spread is surely the bare minimum role of journalism.

Here is the press release – in English, on the website – on air travel: consilium.europa.eu/en/press/press… and here on road transport consilium.europa.eu/en/press/press… – have a read and see whether it makes it seem that everything be OK for British travellers.
