Hard to disagree with this. It seems like a coalition with no separatists in it is determined to prove the separatists’ point, that Belgium no longer works at federal level. plus.lesoir.be/326405/article…

Here’s an article for hardcore governance nerds on how the election in the US could be thrown into confusion by badly written laws. (One for you @CfPS_Ed). Fascinating and worrying. lawecommons.luc.edu/cgi/viewconten…

Sorry, wait. What’s the deal with Ireland there? I’m reasonably sure that quite a few Irish people would say that the North is … I’m not going to get into that.
Wait, and the Western Balkans. Something’s not quite right here…

You would think that if there is one thing we’ve learned in the last two decades, it’s that reasonable compromise with nationalists is neither possible nor desirable, because they always find new grievances. Clearly not.

So the party that drove the creation of Europe’s single market is now a Fidesz clone, smashing up laws, delegitimising opposition and feeding off hardline nationalism. twitter.com/Conservatives/…
If you’re watching this from Brussels (well, from one of the bits of Brussels where you have the power to do things about it, unlike my living room) how can you look at this and see a potential partner, now or in the future?
And if you’re looking at it from Dublin or Belfast, how can you think other than this U.K. government wants a hard border on your island, no matter what the cost?

You’d have to say that the Treasury Solicitor (more important than it sounds) quitting is a sign that UK is in “deliberately breaking international law” territory, rather than @GeorgePeretzQC‘s more hopeful saber-rattling scenario from yesterday. ft.com/content/6186bf…

I thought it was interesting that @egbertlachaert specifically set 2030 as the planning horizon for the next government. Triple significance: 1. Two election cycles so they clearly want to build a relationship that lasts (and with 80 seats if standaard.be/cnt/dmf2020090…
they can pull back the nationalists and far right/left in 2024 they could get a very comfortable majority; 2. significant climate change action will need to have happened by then, particularly around cars; 3. 2030 is Belgium’s 200th anniversary, by using that date
specifically they distinguish from the nationalist parties who will almost certainly not want it acknowledged or celebrated – while they can put forward a vision of a modernised country (with a constitutional reform at the point of the 2024 election bedded in).
Not that this means it will all happen, but after the last two years of drift it’s a welcome level of ambition. Will be looking to see what @PaulMagnette and Conner Rousseau can achieve on the social democratic side of the ledger with the Greens.

Interesting – though you have the connected-vessels problem that the more potential power it has, the more its field of action will be constrained. t.co/sdNo7W7Wxr
I agree that treaty changes are needed, but they probably need to emerge from a broad process in the Conference (particularly the citizen parts where I suspect citizens will want a more streamlined Europe than nation state governments do).
I think if we get stuck on treaty changes as the goal, rather than the treaty as a mechanism to bring about particular policy and governance goals for Europe, we end up with something that inspires 600 people in Brussels and no-one else.

This is a good article but it’s not “squeaky bum time” or any other matey football metaphor. It is a serious supply chain crisis that is the deliberate consequence of the Government’s choices, and which voters in the referendum were told would not happen. twitter.com/Joe_Mayes/stat…
The fact that the Government was elected and its leading members won a referendum makes it worse not better because the prospectus they sold was clearly false. The next few months are an accountability moment – and the UK political/media system needs to step up to it.
As we’re seeing in the US, Hungary and Poland, political systems are not broken by individual actions, they are broken when systems don’t defend themselves by delivering accountability for damaging actions.
