It’s 3 May, the anniversary of Poland-Lithuania’s brief but groundbreaking constitution of 1791. The first written constitution in Europe, second in the world, it was an attempt to reform the largest state in Europe. 4 years later that state ceased to exist.
“The last will and testament of the expiring homeland” created a crowned republic, though still without universal suffrage. The neighbouring monarchies invaded and overturned the constitution, and in two partitions in 1793 and 1795 wiped Poland and Lithuania off the map till 1918
