An interesting discussion on MetaTalk about how it’s not just us clever, witty Brits who don’t take Eurovision seriously.

Talkin’ World War II blues, part 1
Amazing that no-one has yet noticed the crassness of David Beckham’s pre-World Cup party, where the RAF will stage a fly past of … three WWII military planes. What a way to see the team off to Germany! Remember, lads, it’s an invasion of hostile Europe. Stick one to the Hun! What in the name of God are the RAF doing pandering to the stupid jingoism and WWII fixation of the Daily Mail brigade?
I guess we can be grateful it wasn’t ten German bombers.
Update: Even non-Brits just can’t seem to get over it. Terry Wogan has just referred to a German TV presenter, as Lord Haw-Haw on a horse. Ho, ho, Terry. Very witty.
Update 2: Apparently the fly-past is now not going to happen, at the Beckhams’ request.

Eric Forth, RIP
Eric Forth, the right-wing MP for Bromley & Chislehurst has died. I didn’t follow his politics, but his performances in the House of Commons were always very witty and vigorous.

European Parliament petition
Euro-MP Cecilia Malmstroem has launched a petition to keep the European Parliament in one place, rather than have it move for its plenary sessions to Strasbourg. An eminently sensible aim, and if you agree you can sign the petition here.

New York’s main park (and some other parks) will have WiFi access by July, the NYT reports (via The Huffington Post). The article is silent on whether Central Park’s model, Birkenhead Park on the Wirral, will be similarly equipped.

Clutter for Mac OS X
Only about a year after everyone else, I have discovered Clutter, a Mac OS X program that quietly looks up the cover art for whatever tune you happen to be playing in iTunes. You can drag album covers to the desktop to create a visual link to the album in iTunes and – the best feature for me – copy the album art to iTunes with a quick key combination. Great for all that music ripped from my CD collection.

Travel notes: Manchester
An evening at the Marriott Victoria and Albert Manchester before a flight to Belfast. A lovely hotel, though rather out of the way, converted from a warehouse of some sort, and (as so often with Marriott) getting the fundamentals absolutely right.
